1yo horses will work at times slower than 2yo's. When these 1yo's turn 2yo the timed works will decrease. The charting information is below and this should be used as a baseline when trying to figure out what a 1yo will run at 2yo in a timed 6F work.
2F Split
On average a 1yo horse will run a first 2F at .11 seconds slower than a 2yo. Example: 1yo column what it runs now - 2yo column is what the horse will run at 2yo.
1YO then 2YO and the Improvement
.
4F Split
On average a 1yo will run a 4F split at .20 seconds slower than a 2yo. Example: 1yo column what it runs now - 2yo column is what the horse will run at 2yo.
1YO then 2YO and the Improvement
.
6F Split
On average a 1yo will run a 4F split at .21 seconds slower than a 2yo. Example: 1yo column what it runs now - 2yo column is what the horse will run at 2yo.
1YO then 2YO and the Improvement
.
1yo final 6F work times can range from .15 seconds to .25 seconds off pace of their 2yo workout time. As an example - A 1yo running a final 6F pace at .15 seconds longer than a 2yo pace is most likely a true sprinter where as a 1yo running a final 6F pace at .25 seconds longer than a 2yo pace is most likely a router.
I hope this information helps and I would not kill or Cull any 1yo that is born until you work the horse after age change. The charts above should help you read and understand 1 yo works and potential works at 2yo. Below is the actual work times at 1yo and 2yo for the same horses:
