    Yearling Sale December 10, 2019
    prep for season 45

    Never Retire a Yearling

Just want to get that out of the way first since we always hear that people didn't know yearlings have massive age changes.

Last season I posted split times for yearlings and what to expect in general on an age change. These expectations held true. Breeding a yearling is no different than breeding a 2yo. Do not feed into the conversation that a high percentage of yearlings do not transition well from workouts as a 1 year old and race performance as a 2yo. These are just theories from disappointment. I will again post yearling split times and actually post them on main site. Yearlings have the exact same % chance various levels of racing as 2yo's. Additionally, just like 2yo's..a 1yo's best race age is evenly split 33% chance 2yo 33% chance 3yo 33% chance 4yo.

We may run some contests for 1yo breeding but not racing. 2yo Eliminator is the first week in January and we will run it regardless of the turnout and participation.

Have you set a date yet for the 2 year old Eliminator, I assume the 3 year old will be run on the first.

The reason I ask is I have several sires I want to use but won't have any breeds available to them until the new season starts. I have been breeding a lot of late season 2 year olds and should have many entrants in the 3 year old series.

Hoping to have enough time to breed many for the 2 year old series as well.

The 2yo Eliminator will begin roughly 6-7 days after the start of the season. I haven't set a hard date yet but I will shortly. I'd like to do a create only one also even if its a small field.

When you have a chance please post those yearling split times and what we can expect from an age change,

I just bred a yearling and if I hadn't read this post would have immediately killed it, lol.

1Yo Workout Times - What to expect turning 2 years old.

1yo horses will work at times slower than 2yo's. When these 1yo's turn 2yo the timed works will decrease. The charting information is below and this should be used as a baseline when trying to figure out what a 1yo will run at 2yo in a timed 6F work.

          2F Split
On average a 1yo horse will run a first 2F at .11 seconds slower than a 2yo. Example: 1yo column what it runs now - 2yo column is what the horse will run at 2yo.

1YO then 2YO and the Improvement - age change affect

          1yo ---> 2yo change
          22.37 22.27 -0.10
          22.64 22.53 -0.11
          22.67 22.55 -0.12
          22.4 22.3 -0.10
          22.23 22.14 -0.09
          22.64 22.53 -0.11
          21.89 21.86 -0.03
          .
          4F Split
On average a 1yo will run a 4F split at .20 seconds slower than a 2yo. Example: 1yo column what it runs now - 2yo column is what the horse will run at 2yo.

1YO then 2YO and the Improvement - age change affect
          45.38 45.22 -0.16
          45.79 45.57 -0.22
          45.85 45.57 -0.28
          45.42 45.25 -0.17
          45.14 44.98 -0.16
          45.74 45.55 -0.19
          44.67 44.6 -0.07
          .
          6F Split
On average a 1yo will run a 4F split at .21 seconds slower than a 2yo. Example: 1yo column what it runs now - 2yo column is what the horse will run at 2yo.

1YO then 2YO and the Improvement - age change affect
          69.29 69.13 -0.16
          69.23 68.98 -0.25
          69.52 69.31 -0.21
          69.2 69.02 -0.18
          69.01 68.79 -0.22
          69.07 68.84 -0.23
          69.07 68.92 -0.15
          .
1yo final 6F work times can range from .15 seconds to .25 seconds off pace of their 2yo workout time. As an example - A 1yo running a final 6F pace at .15 seconds longer than a 2yo pace is most likely a true sprinter where as a 1yo running a final 6F pace at .25 seconds longer than a 2yo pace is most likely a router.

I hope this information helps and I would not kill or Cull any 1yo that is born until you work the horse after age change. The charts above should help you read and understand 1 yo works and potential works at 2yo. Below is the actual work times at 1yo and 2yo for the same horses:

          Horse A
          1yo - 22.64 45.79 1:09.23
          2yo - 22.53 45.57 1:08.98
          Horse B
          1yo - 22.67 45.85 1:09.52
          2yo - 22.55 45.65 1:09.31

          Horse C
          1yo - 22.40 45.42 1:09.20
          2yo - 22.30 45.25 1:09.02

          Horse D
          1yo - 22.23 45.14 1:09.01
          2yo - 22.14 44.98 1:08.79

          Horse E
          1yo - 21.89 44.67 1:09.07

          Horse F
          1yo - 22.64 45.74 1:09.07
