  • Claimers

I am probably preaching to the choir for most new players, especially if you are aware of the American style of racing. However, for us 'foreigners', claiming races are quite a novelty.

Claiming Races provide a means for a seller to offload excess stock or provide an avenue for weaker class horses to compete at a lower level. The lower the level of claiming fee the lower the class of race. eg. a horse can be claimed for $2 in a 2000 credit claiming race up to (currently) $100 for a 100,000 credit claiming race.

The major benefit for a new stable in claiming a horse, is that it can provide an insight into how the experienced stables set their horses in races, as all 'hidden' information is shown to the new claimant. It can be a very wise investment that can save you many dollars by eliminating mistakes with your untried horses.

Larger stables often offload excess stock and a new stable can pick up a 'bargain' and possibly find a set-up that the large stable has missed allowing the horse to run much better in races.

Claiming fillies/mares is a great way to start a new stable's broodstock. There have been some outstanding broodmares claimed for $20-30 which have bred Stakes performers over seasons past.

First thought by a new stable about claimers is usually "The stable must be getting rid of it because it is a non-performer". This can be true, but a prudent stable with a bit of analysis (watching the horses races, jockey selection, distances etc.), the benefits far outweigh the downside to claiming.

Footnote: if more than one claim goes on the same horse. The claim becomes a lottery and the winning claim is allotted by random draw. The unsuccessful claimants receive their full claiming monies back. The 'selling stable' receives the claim fee less D/D's transfer fee of 15% and the horse is transferred to the winning claimant.

    Good luck with claiming.
